Before the advent of PCBs, circuits were constructed using point-to-point wiring. This approach was highly unreliable, as aging of the circuit could lead to breaks in the wires, resulting in open or short circuits at the connection points. Winding technology represented a major advancement in circuit design; by wrapping fine-gauge wires around posts at connection points, this method significantly enhanced both the durability and replaceability of the wiring. As the electronics industry evolved from vacuum tubes and relays to silicon semiconductors and integrated circuits, the size and cost of electronic components also began to decline. Electronic products increasingly found their way into consumer markets, prompting manufacturers to seek even smaller and more cost-effective solutions. And so, the PCB was born.

PCB Manufacturing Process

The fabrication of PCBs is highly complex. Taking a four-layer printed circuit board as an example, the manufacturing process mainly includes the following steps: PCB layout, core board fabrication, inner-layer PCB layout transfer, core board drilling and inspection, lamination, drilling, copper chemical deposition on hole walls, outer-layer PCB layout transfer, and outer-layer PCB etching.
