In actual engineering practice, selecting high-frequency PCB boards for PCB manufacturers may seem straightforward, yet there are still many factors that need to be considered. Today, we’ll introduce the key factors you should take into account when choosing high-frequency PCB materials during PCB design. Let’s take a look together!
The following will introduce the key considerations for selecting the appropriate board material:
1. Manufacturability:
For example, how are the multiple suppression performance, temperature performance, CAF/heat resistance, mechanical toughness (adhesion) (good reliability), and fire rating?
2. Various performance characteristics (electrical performance, stability, etc.) associated with the product:
Low loss, stable Dk/DF parameters, low dispersion, small variation with frequency and environmental conditions, and tight tolerances for material thickness and adhesive content (resulting in excellent impedance control). If the wiring is long, consider using copper foil with low surface roughness. On the other hand, simulation should be conducted at an early stage of high-speed circuit design; the simulation results serve as the reference standard for the design.
3. Timely availability of materials:
Many high-frequency PCB materials have very long procurement cycles—sometimes as long as 2 to 3 months. With the exception of the standard high-frequency material RO4350, which is in stock, most high-frequency boards need to be supplied by the customer. Therefore, it’s crucial to communicate with your PCB manufacturer well in advance and start stocking up on materials as early as possible.
4. Cost factor: Cost:
Consider the product’s price sensitivity—whether it’s for consumer products or applications in communications, healthcare, industrial, or defense industries.
5. Applicability of laws and regulations, etc.:
It must be integrated with environmental regulations of different countries and meet requirements such as RoHS and halogen-free standards.
Among the factors mentioned above, the operating speed of high-speed digital circuits is the primary consideration for PCB manufacturers when selecting PCBs. The higher the circuit speed, the lower the selected PCB dielectric constant (Df) should be. Medium- and low-loss PCBs are suitable for 10 Gb/s digital circuits; low-loss boards are appropriate for 25 Gb/s digital circuits; and ultra-low-loss boards will be ideal for even faster high-speed digital circuits, with speeds reaching 50 Gb/s or higher.
