What is a PCB? What are the historical developments and current trends in PCB design?
A PCB (Printed Circuit Board), also known as a printed circuit board, serves as the carrier for electronic components in electronic products and provides the pathways for electrical connections among these components. Traditionally, circuit boards are manufactured by using a printing and etching process to create circuit traces and patterns, which is why they are referred to as printed circuit boards or printed wiring boards.
The History of PCB:
In 1925, Charles Ducas in the United States printed circuit patterns onto an insulating substrate and then used electroplating to create conductive traces. This marked the beginning of modern PCB technology.
In 1953, epoxy resin began to be used in the manufacture of printed circuit boards.
In 1953, Motorlora developed the double-sided printed circuit board using the plated-through-hole method, which was later applied to multilayer circuit boards.
In 1960, V. Dahlgreen created flexible printed circuit boards by laminating metal foil films with circuits onto plastic.
In 1961, the U.S. company Hazeltime Corporation, drawing on the through-hole plating method, produced multilayer printed circuit boards.
In 1995, Toshiba developed the B21T multilayer printed circuit board.
At the end of the 20th century, new technologies such as rigid-flex boards, buried resistors, embedded capacitors, and metal-based substrates began to emerge continuously. PCBs have not only become carriers that fulfill interconnection functions but have also evolved into an extremely important component in all electronic products, playing a pivotal role in today's electronics.
